Caldwell receives Governor’s Award Dr. Caldwell researches and publishes on women’s history, Georgia history, and Colonial American history. In addition, she has served on the boards of Augusta Ballet, Historic Augusta, Leadership Augusta, and the Richmond County Historical Society and has been a leader in the Georgia Association of Historians and the Southern Association for Women Historians. Her efforts have helped these organizations increase their resources, outreach, and service. “Dr. Caldwell has worked tirelessly to share stories and heritage with Georgians,” says Gov. Sonny Perdue. “I salute all the winners for their efforts to promote the humanities in Georgia.” Recipients of the Governor’s Awards are nominated by the public, reviewed by a committee of the Georgia Humanities Council board, and approved ultimately by the governor. “These individuals and organizations build community, character, and citizenship in our state through their efforts,” said Jamil S. Zainaldin, president of the Georgia Humanities Council. The Georgia Humanities Council serves the state of Georgia through its projects and grant programs. An independent nonprofit organization, the council receives funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the State of Georgia, foundations, corporations, and individuals. Dr. Caldwell is also the recipient of ASU's 1998 Outstanding Faculty Member award and co-recipient of the 1998 Spencer Award, which recognizes the author of the best article published over the preceding three years in the Journal of the Georgia Association of Historians. She earned an associate's degree from Gulf Park College, a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee, and master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Georgia.

Lee Ann Caldwell, interim director of the Center for the Study of Georgia History, will receive the 2008 Governor’s Award in the Humanities for her commitment to teaching and sharing Georgia’s stories with the community. She is one of 10 recipients who will be honored at the 23rd annual Governor’s Awards in the Humanities luncheon, which will take place at the Old Georgia Railroad Freight Depot in Atlanta on May 8.
