Jocelyn Owens has lived all over the world as an Army brat, but the constant moving and experiencing different environments in her childhood makes her appreciate Augusta.
“I have lived in New York, Virginia, North Carolina, Texas, New Jersey, and Germany,” she says.
Born in Ft. Hood, Texas, she is the youngest of three children. She describes her childhood as “exciting.”
With her father being in the Army, Ms. Owens and her family had to move often. While some people would say that they didn’t like having to move from state to state and school to school, she does not believe that affected her negatively.
“Since I was born into that, I didn’t know any other way,” she says. “It was hard to leave some friends, but I was used to it. It was a good experience to see different things, meet different people, and have the opportunity to live overseas.”
Ms. Owens and her family moved to Germany when she was in the fifth grade. It was very different from life in the United States.
“I liked it, but I wanted to come back to the States,” she says. “I missed the food here. They did have a McDonalds, but it didn’t taste the same.”
Eventually, she and her family moved back to the United States. She spent her high school years in New Jersey, until her father received orders to move to Fort Gordon, GA where he later retired. “Right after my high school graduation, the car was packed,” recalls Ms. Owens.
Since she knew in advance that they were moving to Georgia, she applied for colleges here. She got accepted into the University of Georgia, where she received her bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising in 1996.
“Fashion merchandising covers the management of selling and buying of clothes,” says Ms. Owens. She wanted to open her own clothing store and design her own clothes, but after she became a mom, she decided to pursue other interests.
She now works at Augusta State University in the Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences office as an administrative secretary. She has been working there for about a year and a half.
She enjoys her job. “It sounds crazy to other people, but I love paperwork,” says Ms. Owens. “I’m very detail oriented and there are a lot of details to attend to. Because of the volume [of the work] you cannot get bored,” she explains.
When she leaves campus she goes home to her 10-year-old son, Jalen, whom she home schools. After all the moving she has done in her lifetime, Ms. Owens has finally found a place to call home. "I moved here from New Jersey. The South is a totally different environment and I would love for my son to grow up here."
