The 36th annual Lyceum Series will continue at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 with a lecture by Keith Campbell, part of the scientific team whose experiments resulted in the birth of cloned sheep Dolly. Dr. Campbell will speak on Dolly and Beyond: What We Can Do and Should We Do It? The program will be at the Grover C. Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre, and is free and open to the public.

Dr. Campbell is a cell biologist and embryologist with 28 years of scientific experience, 19 of which have been in the field of cell growth and differentiation. In 1995, his research in the production of mammalian embryos by nuclear transfer at the famed Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland, led to the birth of Megan and Morag, two Welsh mountain lambs. The lambs were the first mammals to be cloned from differentiated cells.

In 2000, Dr. Campbell published Dolly, an explanation of the story of Dolly and the use of transgenic animals. Today, he continues to research the basic mechanisms underlying development and differentiation. He uses transgenic animals, both as models for research and for therapeutic proteins. He also pursues interests in stem cell based therapies and the cell cycle.

The Lyceum Series takes its name from the ancient Greek school outside of Athens where Aristotle fed the inquisitive minds of his students. His style of teaching has been heralded for the way he inspired a thirst for knowledge and love of learning. The series continues that tradition today by providing stimulating and eclectic programming.
