Dr. Robert Parham, dean of the Katherine Reese Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences has named two ASU faculty members to key leadership positions within the college, effective January l, 2005. Dr. Robert O. Jarman, associate professor of mathematics and computer science, has been named associate dean. Dr. T. Clifford Gardiner, assistant professor of English in learning support, will become assistant dean. The Pamplin College consists of 13 academic departments: biology; chemistry and physics; fine arts; history, anthropology and philosophy; languages, literature, and communications; learning support; mathematics and computer science; military science; nursing; political science and philosophy; psychology; and sociology, as well as the Research Center, Writing Center, and Honors Program. “I am especially pleased about the range of skills that Bob Jarman and Cliff Gardiner bring to these jobs,” says Dean Parham. “The opportunity we have to take advantage of their skills is good fortune indeed. More than that, both Bob and Cliff bring with them substantial histories with Augusta State—the kind of experience that is invaluable for these positions.”
Dr. Jarman, noted for his research into database systems, human-computer interactions, and microcomputer applications, is a widely published author. He has written book chapters, reviewed several papers, chaired panels, and received a number of grants to fund his research. He was part of the research team to assess the potential for instituting an ICAPP program at Augusta State. This month he will be presenting A Hands-on UML Experience at the Southeastern Regional Conference of the Consortium of Computing Sciences in Colleges, at Wofford (S.C.) College. His university service includes membership on many committees including, most recently, Academic Policies, Post Tenure Review, Information Technology, and a SACS Educational Program Review. He joined the university in 1990, after having served at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and Jacksonville State University. He also served as an adjunct professor of accounting for Central Texas College, European Division, while he was serving in the U.S. Army in Europe. Dr. Jarman received a doctoral degree from Mississipppi State University, a master’s from Syracuse University, and a bachelor’s degree from Drexel University. Dr. Cliff Gardiner has been appointed assistant dean. He joined ASU in 1984 as a part-time instructor in learning support and became an assistant professor of English and Reading in 1991. He previously taught in Richmond County schools, at Tutt Middle School and the Academy of Richmond County. He was recognized in 1983 as the Richmond County’s STAR Teacher. He has served on numerous campus committees including University Council, Faculty Policies, the SACS Institutional Effectiveness subcommittee, and the Honorary Degree committee. He has published extensively on topics of the freshman experience and writing skills. He is a member of the American Educational Research Association, and the Georgia and National Councils of Teachers of English. Dr. Gardiner earned a doctoral degree from the University of Georgia, a master’s degree from Vanderbilt University, and a bachelor’s degree from Davidson College.
