Staff Spotlight: Julian Veal

Julian Veal, a charismatic gentleman, came to Augusta after his wife, Donna Wear, professor, joined the ASU Department of Biology. He first worked with a subcontractor at the Savannah River Site before coming to ASU six years ago.

As student accounts manager in the Business Office, Julian monitors the “interfaces between the Registrar’s Office, Financial Aid Office, and Accounts Receivable.” Financially speaking, he works to ensure that “all works as it is supposed to work.” He achieves this by devoting his time to assuring all is accurate with students’ accounts at ASU, making certain that students are charged correctly, payments are made, and that refunds are quickly processed. Of particular interest to students is the processing of refunds from awards, grants, and overpayment of fees, which are distributed twice a week. This semester the office has already processed over 4,800 transactions totaling over $5.4 million. The vast majority of these are loan proceeds.

While originally from Milledgeville, Ga., he has lived in Georgia, Florida, and Mississippi. He and his wife have five dogs that they have accumulated by virtue of rescuing them. Mr. Veal enjoys cooking but has no particular favorite cuisine, as he believes they are all good. He keeps busy with his dogs, the house, and yard work. When he has time, he is fond of bird-watching and enjoys assisting his wife and her students with biology projects. Currently they are working in McDuffie County on a project to rescue gopher tortoises. They both love the outdoors and had a great time this summer at the Acadia National Park in Maine.

Something you might not know about Julian–this is actually his second employment at ASU. In the summer of 1971, he temporarily filled in for Marian Cheek, Public Relations Director, while she was on maternity leave for two months. He had been “working at colleges and universities for quite a while,” because he enjoys the educational environment.
