English professor chosen for Lounge magazine award

Of more than 100 nominees, Seretha Williams was one of five Augustans chosen as Five Under 35.

The Five Under 35 competition was presented by Lounge magazine. The contest began earlier this year, says Samantha McKevie, editor of the magazine. “Lounge started excepting nominations of people who are 35 and younger and who are outstanding in the Augusta area. They go above and beyond.”

Each Lounge staff member chose 10 applicants and the group narrowed the search down to 10. A panel of judges then interviewed the 10 nominees and narrowed it down to five.

“The five people were picked for their awesomeness,” says Ms. McKevie.

Nominated by her mother, Phyllis Williams, Dr. Williams, associate professor of English, directs Augusta State’s Minority Advising Program. She also volunteers with Girls, Inc., in the community.

“It’s always nice to be acknowledged,” says Dr. Williams. “It was difficult for me to talk about myself, but in doing that, I realized that I have accomplished a lot in a short amount of time.”

Dr. Williams, along with the other four award winners, will be featured in the November/December edition of Lounge. They will also be profiled on WRDW’s First at Five program the first week in November. The winners also received other gifts for the recognition.

“What impressed us about Seretha Williams was the fact that she participated in Fulbright-Hayes Group Projects Abroad program and studied in East Africa for awhile,” says Ms. McKevie. “She then came back to the University of Georgia and while she was working on her doctoral degree, she taught Swahili. She’s also a single parent. She just believes in the value of hard work.”

Dr. Williams is a member of the College Language Association, the Modern Language Association, and the Southern Conference on Afro-American Studies. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from UGA.
