Staff Spotlight: Ms. Dar Scarff

Dar ScarffRenovations are not only taking place at ASU’s Reese Library, they are also occurring at the home of Ms. Dar Scarff, circulation and interlibrary loan manager of Reese Library.

She and her husband, Dane Scarff, also employed at ASU as a laboratory technician in the biology and chemistry and physics departments, started renovating their home about a year ago. They are taking it one room at a time.

They share their home with pets, she says, that have become her children since her son, James, is now married and has a 13-year-old daughter.

“I tease my husband at times, telling him that I have a pack and a pride. My three dogs are female and my three cats are male,” says Ms. Scarff.

Mr. and Mrs. Scarff are rock hounds when they are not busy at work, she says. Whenever free time presents itself, they hunt for minerals and other precious rocks. Flowers, crafts, and cooking are also on Ms. Scarff’s list of favorites. “I love to cook. I can’t wait for the cold weather so that I can prepare soups.”

Ms. Scarff began working at Augusta State in the bookstore in 1978. Nine years later, she left the university because her husband, who was in the military, was reassigned to Germany. They spent three years traveling throughout Europe. She returned to Augusta and the university in 1990 to work in the library. “ASU is like a family,” she says.

She enjoys working in the library because it allows her to help people. In fact, Ms. Scarff has helped many faculty members and students with their research by obtaining necessary materials through interlibrary loan.

Ms. Scarff was also instrumental in establishing the electronic reserve system, called ERes, which allows students to access materials online that have been placed on reserve.

Ms. Scarff says that ERes as well as ILLiad (an interlibrary loan database) were great accomplishments for the library. “It feels good to have the modern technology to make it easier for students to get the materials they need.”
