Lady Jags finalize schedule for new season
By Joey Warren

Lady Jags BasketballFifteen home games highlight the 2006-07 Augusta State women’s basketball schedule, according to head coach Greg Wilson.

The Lady Jaguars, who were 13-18 overall and 7-13 in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play last season, open their 2006-07 campaign at home on Friday, Nov. 17, against Mars Hill. ASU opens the season with four consecutive home games and plays eight of its first 11 contests in the Christenberry Field House.

“I’m not sure you can make your schedule much more difficult when you play in our league,” Mr. Wilson says. “Since we’re moving to the South Division, our schedule has not been more difficult than it will be this year. Two games against all the conference powers—Columbus State, Armstrong Atlantic, 2006 PBC champions Georgia College, national power Clayton State, and all those folks. It’s getting more challenging every year, but that’s why we like playing in the Peach Belt.”

ASU will face cross-town rival Paine College, traveling to Carter Gymnasium on Monday, Nov. 27. Nearly three weeks later, the Lady Lions return the favor in Christenberry Field House on Saturday, Dec. 16.

“Our non-conference schedule is also more than challenging this year,” says Mr. Wilson. “With a road game at 2006 SAC-8 champ Newberry College and home contests with traditional region powers Catawba and Mars Hill, look for things to get interesting early on this season. Also, two games instead of just one against Paine College changes the landscape of our scheduling just a bit. With all the youth on our roster, it won’t take long for them to see how difficult playing at this level will be for them.”

In seven years at the helm of the program, Mr. Wilson has guided the Lady Jags to a 102-97 record.
