Staff Profile - Ted McNeal

Ted McNealFootball, basketball, movies, and community service are what keep public safety Captain Ted McNeal, occupied when he is not conducting investigations, obtaining warrants, or coordinating the daily operations in Augusta State University's Office of Public Safety.

The Georgia Bulldog fan spends some of his free time coaching the Laney High School football team's offensive line on blocking. Capt. McNeal is also involved with ASU's adopted school Lamar Elementary, keeping the playground equipment and grounds in good shape.

"We are always looking for more people to help out at our adopted schools. We also read to the children at Lamar on an ongoing basis," he says.

The Augusta native has a long career in law enforcement, beginning as a patrol officer at the Medical College of Georgia. While there, he worked his way to public safety road sergeant.

He also worked as a public safety officer and fire fighter in North Augusta for three years and served as Paine College's public safety chief.

He and his family lived in Atlanta for seven years while he worked at Atlanta Metropolitan College, a two-year institution in the University System of Georgia. However, Capt. McNeal was persuaded to return to Augusta by his children.

"My family and I missed home. My kids wanted to go to the high school I graduated from, Laney High School." He adds that the job offer at Augusta State to serve as captain in the public safety office also played a part in his decision to return to Augusta.

It's a decision that he's glad he made. "I have enjoyed meeting a great bunch of people and working with them," says Capt. McNeal. He has also been impressed by the growth of ASU's campus in the past few years.

"ASU has grown by leaps and bounds since I've been here. The change that ASU's campus has undergone has been great," he adds.

Capt. McNeal received his bachelor’s of science in physical education from Albany State University. He is currently working on his fire fighter certification.

“I’m only one course away from receiving my certification as a fire fighter in the state of Georgia,” he adds.
