Globalization "is an important topic that all of our students should be focused on," says Marc Miller, dean of the Hull College of Business. And with that thought, it was chosen as the topic for this year's speaker series.
Beheruz Sethna, president of the State University of West Georgia, kicked off this year's Focus on Globalization on Tuesday, Sept. 18. His presentation, Implications of a Flattening World for American Society and Education, was an eye-opening experience for the hundreds of ASU students, faculty, and staff in attendance. Dr. Miller referred to Dr. Sethna as "an outstanding speaker on global trends." Central to the presentation by Dr. Sethna were theories presented in a book by Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Thomas L. Friedman.
Mr. Friedman, a foreign affairs columnist with the New York Times, will be at Auburn University on Oct. 2, and a group of business students and faculty will be making the trip to Auburn to hear his presentation on his book, The World is Flat: A Brief History of the 21st Century.
To enlighten ASU about the world beyond the CSRA and to promote global thought, the Hull College will use the topic of globalization for its student case competition. The winning student will receive a study abroad scholarship to Paris, France, for the summer of 2008.
