ASU's Bowman Sidelined
Preseason practice got underway Oct. 15 without senior forward Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman who has been sidelined indefinitely due to a heart condition, announced Jaguar head coach Dip Metress. Bowman’s status for the season opener against Montevallo on Friday, Nov. 16, will be determined at a later date.
A first-team All-America selection as a junior by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, he was also named the 2007 College Player-of-the-Year in the state of Georgia among all divisions by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. He averaged 20.5 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game en route to winning Peach Belt Conference Player-of-the-Year honors and leading ASU to the PBC regular-season championship.

ASU Tabbed No. 6 in Country
Augusta State received its first-ever preseason national ranking in the 43-year history of the men’s basketball program. The national publication, Sporting News, ranked the team sixth in the nation, and the Division II Bulletin ranked it number 9.
The Jags take on College of Charleston in an exhibition game on Thursday, Nov. 1, in Charleston, S.C., and face Clemson in an exhibition at Littlejohn Coliseum on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
ASU officially opens the season on Friday, Nov. 16, at the Montevallo Coca-Cola Classic in Montevallo, Ala.

Cross Country
Senior Kristyn Holley was named the Peach Belt Conference’s Runner of the Week on Oct. 1. The award was the second of the season for Holley, a senior from North Augusta, S.C. She finished third at the Georgia Collegiate Championships, covering the 5K course in 19:42, her best 5K time at a multi-team event this year. She was the highest PBC finisher in the race and turned in her fifth straight top-20 and second top-five result this season. She also helped the Jaguars to a second-place finish in the 13-team field, coming in second only to Division I Mercer by eight points.

Women’s Golf
The Augusta State Women’s Golf Team, ranked 39th in the nation, hosted the America’s Choice Mortgage Lady Jaguar Invitational, Oct. 13-14, at the Forest Hills Golf Course, finishing one stroke behind Georgia State University. Prior to the tournament, the Lady Jags sponsored their annual Junior Golf Clinic at the ASU Golf House and practice facility, in which 51 participants, ranging in age from 1-16 participated. The clinic was sponsored by ASU, First Tee, Georgia Pain Specialists, Augusta Coca-Cola, and McDonald’s.

Men's Tennis Claims Titles
John Smith and Igor Vasconcellos captured the Flight 3 doubles championship in the Newman Collegiate Invitational held at the Newman Tennis Center on Oct. 5-7. In singles play, advancing to the finals was Vitor Zandona who claimed the Flight 4 consolation championship. The tournament concluded the Jags’ fall schedule. They begin their spring 2008 schedule when they host Wingate University on Feb. 1 at the Newman Tennis Center.

ASU Collects Victory in Four of Six Flights
The Augusta State women’s tennis team outplayed the pack with a total of four final match wins in the Newman Collegiate Invitational at the Newman Tennis Center. The three-day tournament featured teams from Newberry, Limestone, USC Aiken, Wingate, Queens, and Georgia College and State.
In doubles, the Jags advanced to the final round in two flights. This tournament registered the Jags’ final match of the fall season. The women will be back on the court on Feb 1, when they host Wingate at the Newman Tennis Center.

Volleyball
The volleyball team will compete in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Nov. 9-10, which Lander University is hosting in Greenwood, S.C. The team is coming off a season where enthusiasm and attendance has grown through promotions that have focused attention on charities, the military, and ASU. Lindsey Weider was named the Peach Belt Conference’s Specialist of the Week Oct. 15. With 14 victories, ASU has already surpassed last year’s win total. With one more win, the Jags would match their highest win total since they posted 15 in 2002 and 2003.
