The Lyceum Series kicked off on Friday, Sept. 12, with an appearance by Robert Ressler, a criminal profiler.

Ressler, the founder and former director of the FBI’s acclaimed Violent Criminal Apprehension Program, spoke to a theatre filled with members of the law enforcement community, ASU students, faculty and staff, and the general public. He told the crowd of his interviews with infamous killers like John Wayne Gacy, Charles Manson, and Jeffrey Dahmer.

Famous for coining the term “serial killer” in the ‘70s, Ressler is the acknowledged true-life hero of the movie
Silence of the Lambs. He has consulted on Hollywood movies, including Copycat with Sigourney Weaver, and many high profile criminal cases. Ressler was instrumental in creating a system for personality profiling of serial killers, and the television series, The X-Files, was inspired by his work at the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit.

In addition to his 22-year career with the FBI, he is also a world-renowned author. His most recent book,
I Have Lived in the Monster, earned him the American Academy of Psychiatry and Law’s Amicus Award for contributions to the field.

The next program in the Lyceum Series will feature Sherrie Maricle and DIVA, a New York City-based concert jazz orchestra, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre. General admission is $8. Special admission costs $5.

The Lyceum Series, in its 36th season, takes its name from the ancient Greek school outside of Athens where Aristotle fed the inquisitive minds of his students. His style of teaching has long been heralded for the way he inspired a thirst for knowledge and love of learning. The Lyceum series continues that tradition today by providing stimulating and eclectic programming
