John B. Flowers, III retires as vice president for university advancement

John B. Flowers, IIIJohn B. Flowers, III, vice president for university advancement, has announced that he will step down after serving as the university’s chief advancement officer for nearly 10 years. His retirement is effective October 1.

Mr. Flowers’ resignation was accepted “with deep regret” by President Bloodworth, who called him “a valuable member of ASU’s leadership team.”

“The leadership he has demonstrated over the past ten years—a period of unprecedented growth for the university—is commendable, and I am most appreciative of his contributions, both to the university and to the ASU Foundation,” says Dr. Bloodworth.

A native of Mount Olive, N.C., Mr. Flowers came to ASU with an extensive background in fundraising. He served as vice president for external affairs at St. Andrews College in Laurinburg, N.C., capital campaign director at Ketchum, Inc., in Pittsburgh, director of development for the Community School of the Arts in Charlotte, N.C., executive director of the Thomasville Cultural Center in Thomasville, Ga., and as the executive director of the Stageville Preservation Center in Durham, N.C.

Active in civic and professional organizations, he is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the Chief Advancement Officers Advisory Council of the University System of Georgia, the Georgia Educational Advancement Council, the Rotary Club of Augusta, the Augusta Authors Club, Historic Augusta, and the Augusta Museum of History. He is the author of two books and has also written a number of scholarly and popular works on history and horticulture.
