Ralph Watkins, sociology, was quoted in a September 13 article in the New York Times about hip hop music and religion. Anthony Kellman, languages, literature, and communications, had a poem, Rainbow of Sand, (from his book, Wings of a Stranger), included in The Forward Book of Poetry, an anthology, published in London by Faber and Faber. Also, his poem Anna Fortuna was published in the most recent issue of Obsidian 111, the literary journal of North Carolina State University in Raleigh. He was also a featured performer at the September 5 River Walk Presents, an evening featuring jazz music and poetry. Deborah vanTuyll, languges, literature, and communications, has been named to the editorial board of Journalism History, the premier journal for media historians. She was also quoted in a recent edition of Pasatiempo, the arts and entertainment magazine of the Santa Fe New Mexican in an article about reporters who are embedded with troops in Iraq. The ASU Career Center partnered with the Society of Human Resource Management, Augusta Area Chapter and the Department of Vocational Rehabilitiation to implement the High School Hi-tech program with a local school district. This program provided career related courses, job shadowing, and job search preparation to disabled students in Augusta-Richmond County Schools. The partnership is aimed at helping students to explore their career and educational pursuits past high school. McKinley Thomas, kinesiology and health science, recently attended the 75th Annual Meeting and Conference for the Georgia Public Health Association (GPHA) held in Savannah, where he presented a paper titled Understanding Geographic Information Systems in Measuring Public Health News Briefs The first program in the Building Community program will feature communications professor Steve Clements and his wife, Claudia Coplon, a public relations professional, in a presentation October 27th, at noon in Washington Hall Towers. Hugh Hudson, executive secretary for the Georgia Conference of the American Association of University Professors, will be at ASU on Friday, October 15, at 2 p.m. in W1002 Science Building to discuss the benefits and positive influence of AAUP. German Ambassador Hans Arnold will be at ASU on Thursday, October 7, to give a lecture titled The Future of U.S.-European Relations. The program is scheduled for noon in W1008 Science Building. Ambassador Arnold is currently on a lecture assignment with the German Embassy in Washington, D.C. He brings with him more than 50 years of diplomatic experience, having served as Germany’s Ambassador to Italy, The Netherlands, and the United States.
