The Georgia Historical Association will present a historical marker to Augusta State University in a ceremony Friday, October 8, at 11 a.m., recognizing the institution’s roots with the Academy of Richmond County. The marker will be unveiled outside University Hall and will be installed at a later date near the university’s main entrance on Walton Way. The Academy of Richmond County, chartered in 1783, offered collegiate education throughout its long history, preparing students for acceptance into colleges as sophomores and juniors. In 1910, a fifth year of high school was added, and in 1925, the classes became curriculum for the Junior College of Augusta. The junior college—under supervision of the Richmond County Board of Education—remained with the academy until 1957 when it left the academy on Baker Street and moved to the abandoned Augusta Arsenal on Walton Way. The following year, the junior college was accepted into the University System of Georgia and became Augusta College—still a two-year school. In 1963, senior college status was granted, and in 1972, the institution began offering master’s degrees. In 1996, Augusta College became Augusta State University. Today, the university serves more than 6,400 students and offers more than 50 programs leading to associate, bachelor, master’s, specialist, and a cooperative doctoral degree.
