Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Ying Wang

Since she was a little girl, Dr. Ying Wang has been interested in numbers. She pursued that interest and obtained a bachelor’s degree in mathematical science from Tianjin Technology University in Tianjin, China, a master’s degree from Eastern New Mexico State University, and a doctoral degree from New Mexico State University.

The professor of mathematics began teaching at New Mexico State University in 2001, and later transferred to Marywood University in Scranton, Penn., where she was an assistant professor. She joined ASU in August.

“At Augusta State, there is more of a research environment,” says Dr. Wang. “I really enjoy my work, and I enjoy teaching here.”

Dr. Wang says that the students at ASU are bright and challenge her more. She also compliments the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, saying that the faculty members and staff are like a family.

“Every Friday, we have a math seminar in the department,” Dr. Wang says. “We have many mathematicians with different areas of expertise, and it’s a good way for us to come together.”

“One reason I moved to the United States was to get more education,” she says. “The other reason was to learn more about the different cultures.”

When she’s not teaching, Dr. Wang enjoys origami, bead making, gymnastics, classical music, traveling, bowling, hiking, and mechanical engineering.

“I like to fix cars,” she laughs. “I fix my own brakes and door handles.”
