National publication features ASU's A.L.E.R.T.S. organization

Augusta State University’s chapter of A.L.E.R.T.S. (Adult Learners Eagerly Returning to School) was recently featured in Nontraditional Student Report, a nationally distributed publication.

A.L.E.R.T.S. is a non-traditional student group designed to provide support, encouragement, resources, and continued assistance to all students, especially the non-traditional student, adjust to their return to the learning environment. The organization, and its president Karen Sturgill, were featured in two articles. The first, Nontraditional Student Group Helps Keep Students Retained, included a feature on the group and its member activities. The group’s desire to be a support system as well as an active student organization on campus is highlighted in the story, Ms. Sturgill said.

The second piece, Group President Explains How to Support Nontraditional Students on Campus, featured suggestions from Ms. Sturgill to help non-traditional student organizations grow and be successful. Some of those suggestions include allowing organization representatives to be present at open house events, urging non-traditional groups to participate in inter-group activities and contests, and encouraging participation in school events.
