Preliminary figures indicate record enrollment

ASU students

If early figures are any indication, a record number of students have enrolled at Augusta State University this fall. Preliminary figures show ASU’s fall enrollment at 6,128, which is about 200 more students than attended in fall 2002, a record-breaking
attendance.

While, historically, economic downturns have been a catalyst for larger enrollment numbers, the increase can also be attributed to hard work on behalf of faculty and staff. “They’ve worked very hard to accommodate the students who enrolled here by doing things like overloading classes,”says Katherine Sweeney, director of admissions and registrar.

ASU also has a larger presence in the community these days, increasing our visibility among the people who make up the majority of our student body. “We have really stepped up our advertising to get our name out to the public,” Ms. Sweeney said. “We spent more time in area high schools this year, and because of advertising and direct mail, our visitations have more visitors.”

Attracting students to ASU is only half of the job though, especially for those students who are waiting to transfer to other universities in the system. “We do have several students who are here planning to transfer as soon as they can,” Ms. Sweeney said. “We need to ensure that their experience here is a good one so that maybe they will rethink transferring and decide to stay here to complete their degrees.”
