Augusta State University's women's golf team has got a new coach. Trelle Kite, the former head men's and women's golf coach at Mercer University, was announced as the new coach at an Aug. 4 press conference.

Ms. Kite's four-year run at Mercer ended with some impressive figures. In her time there she had 13 academic all-conference selections, two all-conference selections, and she posted a 100 percent graduation rate. Her leadership of the men’s team resulted in the team improving more than 160 spots in the rankings.

“Trelle brings the experience and leadership qualities to take this program to the national level,” said director of golf Joshua Gregory. “We’re very excited about the future of Augusta State women’s golf under Kite’s direction. She has a proven track record that speaks for itself. With the support that ASU golf has in this community, we know she will fit right in and make a difference with our student-athletes.”

Ms. Kite says she has high aspirations for the team, too. “The only thing I can say is that I’m so excited to be here,” she says. “I’ve actually followed this program for years, and I think the sky is the limit for these young women.”

Ms. Kite earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology from Georgia State University in 1998. During her collegiate career, she captured two individual titles, winning the 1996 Bale Chevrolet/UALR Intercollegiate in 1996 and the 1997 Ole Miss Lady Rebel Intercollegiate. She also posted a top-10 finish in the Georgia Women’s Open in 1996 as an amateur, and she returned to do the same in 2002 as a professional. She qualified for the 1998 U.S. Women’s Amateur, participated in the 2002 Future’s Tour Qualifying School, and was a member of the MidFlorida Golf Tour.

The women’s golf program at ASU is entering its third year of Division I competition and is eligible to qualify for the NCAA postseason. Last season, the team had five top-five finishes, including a third-place finish at the Lady Razorback Invitational. The Lady Jags shaved 30 strokes off their scoring average from the 2001-02 season and jumped
from a ranking of 151st in 2001-02 to 97th in 2002-03.
