Campus committee examines humane values

Webster defines the word “values” as: “to rate according to relative estimate of worth or desirability; evaluate.” President William A. Bloodworth, Jr., has asked a related question: how does Augusta State University define its values?

The question has significance because the first sentence of ASU’s mission statement reads: Augusta State University is committed to excellence in teaching, advancement of knowledge, and enrichment of the community in a climate that fosters humane values and a life-long love of learning.

Recently, President Bloodworth asked Paul Harris, PhD, professor of political science, to lead an effort to determine what ASU’s “humane values” are. The project is called the Humane Values Initiative. “He asked me to lead a campus-wide committee to look into these humane values and to find out what they are,” says Dr. Harris. Although the committee has not been formed yet, it will consist of a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students. The committee will be put together within the next few weeks, Dr. Harris says.

Dr. Harris will discuss the Humane Values Initiative at an A Day Academic Symposium being held from 9-11 a.m. Friday, October 10, in the Science Building. The symposium is sponsored by the ASU chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, of which Dr. Harris is the president. This year, the symposium will be devoted to the Humane Values Initiative. “I’m glad the president has asked me to do this,” says Dr. Harris.

For information on how to become involved with the Humane Values Initiative, call Dr. Harris at 667-4419 or email to pharris@aug.edu.
