A Day activities begin with the Jaguar Jaunt
Since 1994, Augusta State has conducted its annual campaign, A Day for Augusta State University, to raise friends and funds for the university. While October 8–the culmination of the annual fund drive–has been designated as A Day, a week of activities will lead up to the event, beginning with a Jaguar Jaunt on Saturday, October 2. The certified 5-K run/walk will begin at the Maxwell Alumni House at 8 a.m.
On Wednesday, October 6, the Department of Nursing pairs with local health care providers and services to offer a free community health fair at the Christenberry Fieldhouse. Services will include free blood pressure checks and screenings on vision, hearing, cholesterol, and glucose in addition to analysis of body fat, massage therapies, and information about living healthy.
On Thursday, October 7, at 5:30 p.m., an opening reception for visiting artist Gillian Pederson-Krag will be held in the Fine Arts Gallery. The exhibition includes paintings and prints by the artist, who is the 2004 Frances Niederer Artist-in-Residence at Hollins University.
On Friday, October 8—A Day—events begin with a Phi Kappa Phi symposium on the history of Augusta State University. The 9 a.m. program, Traditions and Transitions: Faculty Remember Their Student Experiences, will feature more than 20 ASU faculty members remembering their experiences as students at Augusta College. This will be followed by an 11 a.m. dedication ceremony of a historical marker during which the Georgia Historical Society and the ASU Foundation will recognize the academic tradition of ASU, which dates back to the chartering of the Academy of Richmond County in 1783.
At noon, the Department of Psychology will present Dr. Keith Campbell, University of Georgia, in a presentation titled Narcissism and Relationships. The free program will take place in W1002 Science Building.
Later in the day, the Alumni Association will hold its annual barbecue and A Day Celebration in the campus quadrangle, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Alumnus James Britt, '75, an award-winning barbecuer, will be cooking on site, and guests will be entertained by the bluegrass music of Steel String Theory.
The following day, the Office of Admissions will host a campus visitation from 1-3 p.m. in University Hall, and prospective students will have the opportunity to visit with representatives from admissions, financial aid, and academic departments. A Day activities conclude the following Thursday, October 14, at 8 p.m., with a gala concert by the Department of Fine Arts that showcases the talents of students in the music program.
The A Day for Augusta State University campaign highlights the programs and services that ASU offers the community.
While state funding provides for the operation of the university, private donations enable the university to fund such projects as the Cullum Lecture Series, special technology and equipment projects, employee events, faculty development, scholarships, and more. The community campaign, chaired by David S. “Deke” Copenhaver, executive director of the Central Savannah River Land Trust, has set its goal at $390,000. The campus campaign, chaired by Dr. James Garvey, professor of English, kicked off August 10, and is nearing its goal of $110,000.
Last year, the A Day for Augusta State University annual fund drive raised $412,000.
