University Hall is dedicated

dedication ceremonyA crowd of over 250 gathered on August 24 to celebrate the dedication of University Hall—Augusta State’s newest classroom replacement building—with 23 dignitaries taking part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Weather conditions forced the celebration inside to the 150-seat auditorium but didn’t dampen the spirits of the crowd as the overflow watched the ceremony on a monitor set up in the atrium. A reception followed the ceremony.

ASU President William A. Bloodworth, Jr., University System of Georgia Chancellor Thomas C. Meredith, and vice chair of the Board of Regents J. Timothy Shelnut delivered remarks and were later joined by 20 others to cut the 25-foot ribbon. Thirteen members of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, who were on a two-day planning retreat at Augusta State, took part in the ceremony, along with Sen. Don Cheeks (R-Ga.); Rep. Quincy Murphy (D-Augusta); Dr. George Christenberry, president of Augusta College for 16 years; Ms. Elaine Clark smith, chair of the ASU Foundation; Dr. Daniel W. Rahn, president of the Medical College of Georgia; and Ms. Linda Daniels, vice chancellor for facilities for the University System.

Following the ribbon-cutting, the president asked three individuals with long ties to the institution to cut his piece of the 25-ft. ribbon: Mr. Russell Blanchard, class of 1928; Mr. Harry Dolyniuk, associate professor emeritus of chemistry, and former Speaker Pro Tem of the Georgia House of Representatives Jack Connell.

University Hall houses the College of Education, the Department of Nursing, telecommunications, the Writing Center, Information Technology Services, and Media Services. The building was designed by the architectural firms of Jova/Daniels/Busby and Hinman Architectural Group and was constructed by Evergreen Construction Company. The $22 million project is the second phase of a two-part project to replace six Augusta Arsenal warehouse buildings that were converted for academic use 30 years ago.
