The “I gave the First Day” campaign of the campus drive for A Day for ASU pushed the one-day total to within $7,000 of its goal, according to Ms. Michele Ellington, director of annual giving. This year’s campus goal is $115,000, and $108,500 had already been pledged by the end of the first day. As of August 29, the total pledges and/or contributions exceeded the campus goal by $3,371, bringing the total amount to $118,371, says Ms. Ellington. First-day givers were treated to a free grilled hamburger lunch from Outback Steakhouse and were given a T-shirt and tumbler. More than 400 faculty and staff made a donation or pledge. “Campus volunteers have done a terrific job encouraging their co-workers to contribute,” says Ms. Ellington. “With the leadership being provided by Dr. Jim Garvey, campus chair and professor of English, I have no doubt that we will exceed the 2004 final figure of $120,200.” The community A Day campaign kicks off September 22 at the annual luncheon of the President’s Club. Mr. Ernie Sizemore, a current member of the ASU Foundation, is serving as chair of the community drive that seeks to raise $300,000, making a goal of $415,000 for the A Day for ASU campaign. The annual A Day program focuses on fundraising and friendraising for ASU, and it culminates on Friday, October 7, with an alumni barbecue and celebration in the campus quadrangle from 5:30-8:30 p.m. This year's event will feature barbecue cooked on-site by award-winning alumnus Mr. James Britt. Live entertainment will be provided by the Cadillac Stepbacks.
