The 38th annual Lyceum Series gets underway this month with four programs scheduled during September in the Maxwell Theatre. Improvisational theatre—acting without a script—lends its finest when Transactors Improv, the oldest, active improvisational theater in the South, appears on Tuesday, September 13, at 7 p.m. Improv involves the audience as actors make up the script as they go along. A critic for the New York Times reviewed a performance of Transactors Improv, and said, “They entertained me wondrously well . . . made me laugh until I wept. So go catch Transactors Improv. Take Kleenex.” Another professional touring company, Lelavision, combines modern and aerial dance, music, theatre, and large interactive musical sculptures to create innovative works of awe and whimsy on Thursday, September 29, at 7 p.m. The Stage, a London publication, reviewed Lelavision, saying, “This highly innovative performance delights and amuses, and springs many surprises.” The name is more than a play on the names of the the founders, Leah Mann and Ela Lambin, it is derived from two Sanskrit terms meaning “creation” and “creative spark.” These two programs, funded by student activity fees, are free to students, faculty, and staff with a valid ASU ID. A free guest pass may also be obtained from the student activities office in Washington Hall prior to the activity, by presenting a valid ASU ID. General admission is $5. The Augusta Opera will present Jacques Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffmann on September 23 and 24 at 8 p.m. in the Maxwell Theatre as part of the Lyceum Series. This 19th century colorful and entertaining masterpiece is the story of Hoffmann's search for love that will both charm and excite. Admission is free with valid ASU ID.
