First day of campus fundraising drive is successful

More than 415 faculty and staff made a donation or pledge on the “I gave the First Day” campaign of the campus drive for A Day for Augusta State University, bringing the one-day total to within $10,000 of its goal. This year’s campus goal is $120,000, and $110,000 had already been pledged by the end of the first day, according to Peggy Ruth Geren, chair of the campus campaign and associate professor of education in ASU’s Department of Educational Leadership, Counseling, and Special Education. As of Aug. 21, the total amount in pledges and/or contributions was already $116,200, a little under $4,000 shy of the total campus goal.

“The campus response to A Day, the First Day, was wonderful,” says Dr. Geren. “Many departments reached the 100 percent level of giving, and I am confident that we will exceed the goal by the end of the campus campaign. I greatly appreciate the commitment of the department leaders; they are great ambassadors for the good work the ASU Foundation accomplished with our gifts. The active response to A Day is typical of the generous spirit of our campus.”

First-day givers were treated to a free grilled hamburger lunch from Outback Steakhouse and were given a T-shirt. The campus campaign ends on Friday, Sept. 15.

The community A Day campaign kicks off Sept. 21 at the President’s Club Luncheon. Ernie Sizemore, a current member of ASU’s Foundation, is serving as chair of the community drive that seeks to raise $295,000, making a total goal of $415,000 for the A Day for ASU campaign.

The annual fund drive focuses on fundraising and friendraising for ASU, and it culminates on Friday, Oct. 6, with an alumni barbecue and celebration in the campus quadrangle. Entertainment will be provided by Gypsy Bandwagon, a group from the Great Smoky Mountains who incorporates a wide variety of music styles.
