Brian Rust, professor of art, has been named the Department of Art's new interim chair, effective August 13. Following in the footsteps of previous interim chair Kristin Casaletto, he will serve a one-year appointment while the department conducts a national search for a full-time chair.

"We are now looking to find ways to bring the art department into the 21st century. We are pushing hard to integrate digital components into the classrooms as well as continuing to work with the community," says Mr. Rust.

"I would like to be a part of helping our department find our own voice and identity within the ASU community."

The Washington state native is a sculptor of large-scale sculpture and temporary installations. He exhibits his collage drawings nationally and is currently represented by the Mary Pauline Gallery in Augusta. His most recent work is the completion of a sculptural benching project at Winthrop University and a solo show at a Sumter, S.C. gallery.

Mr. Rust has participated in the Djerassi Resident Artist Program in Woodside, Calif., and was a resident artist at the Hambidge Center in Rabun Gap, Ga., and at the Connemara Nature Conservancy in Dallas, Texas. He was also commissioned to create artwork for the Atlanta University Center during the Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996.

Mr. Rust received his bachelor's degree in fine arts from the University of Washington in Seattle and his master's degree in fine arts from the University of California at Berkeley. He presently teaches foundation and upper division sculpture classes at ASU.
