ASU Ranks 10th in Division I Men's Golf

golf photoAugusta State University has gained national attention for its men's golf team, which is currently ranked 10th in the Division I Men's MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings.

Individually, three ASU golfers ranked among the top 100 players in the country. Jamie Elson ranks No. 13; Michael Webb, 37; and Oliver Wilson, 43.

The University of Georgia retained the top spot in the rankings, followed in the top 10 by Georgia Tech, Clemson University, Texas Christian University, University of Florida, University of South Carolina, University of North Carolina, University of Texas, University of Southern California, and Augusta State University.

The rankings are based on the golf teams' performance during the 2000-2001 season. MasterCard Collegiate Golf rankings are administered by the College Golf Foundation and compiled by Golfstat in cooperation with the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA).

Under third-year head coach Jay Seawell, the Jaguars got off to a blazing start during the 2000-2001 season. Seawell has led the Jaguars to six top five finishes in nine tournaments so far, including a fourth place at the recent Schenkel/EZ-GO Invitational, third place at the Gator Invitational, and three runner-up finishes at the Duke Golf Classic, the Mercedes Benz Collegiate, and the Cleveland Golf USC-Aiken Collegiate.

The Jaguars will be in action again at the 23rd Annual Cleveland Golf/ASU Invitational March 30 - April 1, at the Forest Hills Golf Club. Kroger is sponsoring the tournament in partnership with Nestle´ NESQUIK.
