Honors Convocation Recognizes Outstanding Individuals

Outstanding faculty and students were recognized during March at the annual Honors Convocation in which the prestigious Richard S. Wallace Distinguished Service Award, the Outstanding Faculty Member Award, and the Louis K. Bell Research Award were presented. The event, which recognized over 100 honorees, was held at the Physical Education/Athletic Complex.

Richard D. Harrison, EdD, professor of physical education and chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science, received the Wallace Distinguished Service Award. The Tampa, Fl., native has been a faculty member for 29 years and has chaired the department since 1991. He has also served the university as a swim coach, tennis coach, and assistant cross country coach. Dr. Harrison is active in the Georgia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, and serves as editor of the organization's journal. He received bachelor and doctoral degrees from the University of Georgia and a master's degree from the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

The Outstanding Faculty Member Award went to Kim Davies, PhD, assistant professor of sociology. Dr. Davies joined ASU in 1996 after earning bachelor, master's, and doctoral degrees from Ohio State University. The Cum Laude graduate in sociology and women's studies received a 1998 Outstanding Paper Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences for a study on women and homicide, and has continued her research with a 2000 study on gender characteristics in elementary school textbooks.

The Louis K. Bell Research Award was presented to Lyle R. Smith, EdD, professor of education – an honor he also won in 1986. He also was selected by the graduating class of 1979 to be commencement speaker. He has performed extensive research on mathematics classroom teaching, and produced about 40 publications and 30 presentations on the topic. He authored Techniques of Research, a textbook published this year by Houghton-Mifflin. A Phi Delta Kappa journal referred to Dr. Smith as "one of the foremost experts on teacher clarity."

The Honors Convocation recognized students for their academic achievement, service to the community, and leadership in extracurricular activities. Glenda M. Northcutt, an education major, was named the Academic Recognition Scholar for ASU, a Board of Regents program that recognizes the top academic student at each of the 34 institutions in the University System.
