March In Review
March
was a month for the showcasing of scholarly research. The International Kirkegaard
Conference, coordinated by Elsebet Jegstrup, associate professor of philosophy,
drew presenters and participants from throughout the world. The Women's Week
Symposium and the Second Annual Student Research and Fine Arts Conference gave
our own students opportunities to present their research. The Sandhills Writers
Conference, drew editors, published authors, and would-be authors to campus
for the three day event that was coordinated by Tony Kellman, associate professor
of English. The Cullum Lecture Series, which is focusing on Why
Religion? presented visiting lecturers on Judaism, Hinduism, and African
religions. ASU's international students shared their cultures and customs at
the International Festival, March 15.
During Women's Week, students had the opportunity to make "goddesses" from clay they performed in the Maxwell Theatre they displayed their art and they presented a symposium on various aspects of women's studies. According to Sean Mile, director of the Women's Studies program, the interdisciplinary nature of the event was invigorating. Seretha Williams, assistant professor of English, and Priscilla Hollingsworth, associate professor of art, coordinated the symposium. Ernestine Thompson, associate professor of sociology; Saundra Reinke, assistant professor of political science; and Kim Davies, assistant professor of sociology, sponsored the student symposium presentations.
The
Second Annual Student Research and Fine Arts Conference,
held March 14 in the New Science Building, gave about 20 students an opportunity
to share their research. The event, sponsored by the Honor Society of Phi Kappa
Phi, drew an audience throughout the day. The conference was directed by Jurgen
Brauer, associate professor of economics; Paul Harris, assistant professor of
political science; Stephen Hobbs, professor and chair of psychology; and Gary
Stroebel, professor of chemistry.
