
Fall Semester Commencement
About 336 students will graduate in the December commencement ceremony, which will be held Saturday, December 16, at 10 a.m. in the Physical Education Athletic Complex. Joseph D. Greene, the Cree Walker Professor of Business Administration and this year's recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Member Award, will be the featured speaker.
An alumnus, Greene earned a bachelor's degree in 1972 and received a master's degree in risk management and insurance from the University of Georgia. He received a Chartered Life Underwriter designation from the American College at the University of Pennsylvania and was an International Business Fellow through the London Business School, where he studied global economics in 1987. He was selected as the university's Distinguished Alumnus in 1987, and in 1996 was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Augusta. His previous honors include being named Man of the Year by the Thomson Progressive Civic Club and Outstanding Young Man by the Thomson Jaycees.
He also was included in the publications, Outstanding Black Leaders in America and Outstanding Young Men of America. Greene is a past chair and member of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and a past member of the McDuffie County Board of Education. He is the author of Matters of Money, a book that offers advice on a variety of financial topics.
This year's commencement includes graduates from the age of 19 through 62, with one graduate born in the 1930s, 11 in the 1940s, 35 in the 1950s, 63 in the 1960s, 223 in the 1970s, and one in the 1980s. It also includes Hannah Matthews, an administrative specialist in Reese Library who will receive her masters in education degree.
