Campus Notables

MixonWayne Mixon, history and anthropology, chaired a session entitled Anthologizing Southern Literature: Reacting to the New Norton Anthology at the annual Southern Historical Association meeting in New Orleans.

Mixon also appeared on CBS WRDW Nov. 20 regarding the resurgence of patriotism in the United States.

Reinvention, Reversal and Redemption was the topic of assistant professor of communications Seretha Williams’ presentation Nov. 7. The presentation focused on African American novelist Leon Forrest and was part of the Chair’s Forum, hosted by the Department of Languages, Literature, and Communications.

MyersIn conjunction with National Chemistry Week, two Augusta State University assistant professors were featured in a chemistry video for students. The video, featuring Tom Crute and Stephanie Myers, aired in November on Comcast and satellite broadcast television.

CruteThe video on energy changes was developed for middle school students and their teachers by the Savannah River American Chemical Society. Much of the video was filmed at ASU. National Chemistry Week was Nov. 4 to 10.

Bill Bompart, vice president of academic affairs, made a humorous math presentation entitled Testing for Achievement during October in Somerset, N.J. The presentation was for the National Council of Teachers Mathematics Eastern Regional Conference.

Additionally, Bompart addressed the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges annual conference on Real World Mathematics Applications in Toronto.

Chris Murphy, history and anthropology, presented Historic Preservation at ASU at the Maxwell Alumni House at a meeting of Emeriti faculty.

Saundra Reinke, assistant professor of public administration, was named as an Academy Partner Service-Learning Fellow for the 2001-‘02 academic year. Reinke received $2000 to initiate and implement service-learning within the Master of Public Administration program here.

CohenThe Augusta Jewish Community Center honored Jacquelyn Cohen, assistant professor of mathematics in learning support, as their Humanitarian of the Year

Jurgen Brauer, professor of economics discussed his book The Economics of Regional Security: NATO, the Mediterranean and Southern Africa November 14, at a Meet the Author event at Reese Library.

An art exhibition at the Mary Pauline Gallery features several ASU professors and alumni including Philip Morsberger, Janice Williams, Brian Rust, Jackson Cheatham, Kathy Girdler-Engler, and Robert Bazemore. The exhibit runs Dec. 7 to 19 from 5 to 9 p.m. The gallery is located at 982 Broad St.

Frank Chou, professor of education emeritus, was interviewed by NBC WAGT Nov. 19 on the subject of international students.




Augusta State's Reese Library featured prominently in an article appearing in the Nov. 16 issue of the
Chronicle of Higher Education. The article focused on the declining gate count at libraries and the ability to access libraries online.
