Facilities Update

Phase IIAre you wondering what the construction on campus is all about? Here, Dr. Kathy Hamrick breaks down the cost, purpose and completion date of each project on the ASU campus.

1. Campus Facilities Master Plan 1997-1998
The firm of Hellmuth Obata and Kassabaum, Inc. was hired to develop our facilities master plan as part of the Board of Regents’ master planning effort. This $100,000 project resulted in a plan for the location of future buildings, parking lots, and pedestrian and traffic flow. The plan calls for a pedestrian only center of campus. In March, 2000. Johnson, Laschober and Associates and Sizemore Floyd Architects were hired to update the Master Plan, in particular the front entrance. They also performed a final update in January, 2000.

2. Science Building

The science building, a $19.4 million dollar project, is complete. Labs were held in the facility summer 2000, and classes and labs in Fall 2000. The building houses the departments of Psychology, Biology, and Chemistry and Physics. It is a 122,000 square foot building with a three story atrium lobby, faculty offices, and a lot of science labs.

3. Central Utilities Plant
This $4.97 million dollar project includes the renovation of the building where iron lungs were repaired during the polio epidemic. The building has been renovated to include physical plant offices and boilers and chillers for campus utility operations. The project also includes five miles of underground water lines. Construction began in September 1999. The building is complete, and the physical plant offices are occupied. Construction of the underground water lines is ongoing.

4. Maxwell Alumni House

After many problems with construction of the Maxwell Alumni House, our Director of Physical Plant assumed the role of General Contractor for the building. The $285,000 renovation was completed in April, 2000. It houses the offices of Development and Alumni Relations.

5. Allgood Hall
This 122,000 square foot classroom building is named after the late Regent Tom Allgood. The $18.2 million dollar project was designed by Sizmore Floyd Architects of Atlanta and the Woodhurst Partnership of Augusta. It is under construction by Two State Construction Company of Thompson, GA. and has an expected completion date of Spring 2002, with classes beginning in the summer of 2002. The facility will house the entire College of Business, the office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences, and six departments from the College of Arts and Sciences. It will have a three story atrium lobby with a cafe, 147 faculty offices, 24 classrooms, 7 student study rooms, and 3 computer labs.

6. Classroom Replacement, Phase II
Hinman Architects of Augusta and Jova, Daniels Busby of Atlanta are the architects for the $21.7 million project. Design began in February, 2000. The project will include a 111,000 square foot classroom building that will house the College of Education, the Department of Nursing, the Writing Center, the Telecommunications Center, Computer Services and Media Services. It will have 31 classrooms, two computer labs, student study areas, and a large lobby. The estimated completion date is Fall, 2003. The front entrance to campus and the demolition of the six academic buildings are included in this project.

7. Sheftall-Cleckley Greenhouse
The $86,000 greenhouse was completed in summer, 1998. It was a gift from Mrs. Emily Cleckley.

8. The Campus Consortium Project
This $290,000 project created computer laboratories in the PEAC.

9. New Student Center

A new student center has been requested, and will continue to be requested from the Board of Regents. A group of ASU students have surveyed over 1000 students and have developed a pre-program for the building.

10. History Walk
Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Jimmy Lester, our DOT board member, ASU received two grants totaling $1.2 million in Georgia DOT funds for a History Walk project along Walton Way, Katherine Street, and Arsenal Ave. Davis and Associates have been hired as the architects for the project. The project will include a decorative wall and a walk with rest areas, bronze maps and displays depicting the history of the university, of Summerville, and of the Arsenal. The project also includes the renovation of the arsenal guardhouse as a museum. Construction on the project should begin in spring 2002.

11. Katherine Street Parking Lot
This large parking lot is complete and can accommodate over 125 cars. The total project, including the purchasing of a house, demolition, design, storm drainage and paving was approximately $462,000. ASU received State Aid Project funding from the Georgia DOT for part of this cost.

12. Public Safety Renovation
The building vacated by Physical Plant staff was renovated to house the offices of Public Safety. The $260,000 project was completed by April, 2001.

13. Guardhouse Restoration
ASU has received a $40,000 grant from Georgia Senator Don Cheeks (and a promise of more to come) and considerable private funding for the restoration of the arsenal guardhouse on the corner of Walton Way and Katherine Street. The planned $150,000 project will restore the guardhouse to it’s original condition. It will be used as a museum and a cornerstone of the History Walk.

14. Small Business Development Renovation

The Small Business Development Center is undergoing $164,000 in renovations. The building will house the Personnel Office.

15. New Kilns
The Fine Arts Kilns have undergone $64,000 in safety improvements.

16. Archaeology Lab

The Arsenal Powder Magazine has been renovated and restored into a new archaeology lab. The footprint of the new Science Building was shifted in 1993 at no small cost to save this historic building. The renovations and restorations were an $80,000 project.

17. ADA Bellevue Ramp
Bellevue was the original Walker Plantation house and is quite historic. It now houses ASU Counseling and Testing. A new ADA ramp was added with the blessing of HPD in Atlanta for $31,000.

18. Boykin Wright Hall Parking
The gravel lot at Boykin Wright was enlarged, paved and landscaped for $84,000.

19. Column restoration on Benet and Rains
Over $100,000 has been spent on restoring the columns on Benet and Rains.

20. Forest Hills Master Plan
The Atlanta firm of Anderson Design has been hired to develop a master plan for the Forest Hills campus. The plan is over 50% complete. It will site a proposed 5,000 square foot golf house and will make recommendations on land acquisition adjacent to the property.

21. Golf House
A group of area businessmen are raising funds for a new $1,000,000 golf house and practice facility for our golf teams and for the teaching of golf. The Forest Hills Master Plan will suggest sites for this facility.
