ASU Receives Second TEA Grant for History Walk
A
second grant for Augusta State's proposed History Walk has been announced by
James Lester, 10th District Georgia Department of Transportation board member.
The $500,000 Federal Transportation Enhance Activity (TEA) grant for Phase II
of the History Walk supplements a $700,000 grant previously awarded. Both funds
must be matched by the university. The grant will be used to complete the History
Walk so that it encircles the campus. The first grant will fund the History
Walk along Walton Way. Currently in the design stage, the walkway will feature
historic markers that chronicle the history of the Augusta Arsenal, the university,
and the Summerville District. It will also include a decorative wall, lighting,
landscaping, and rest areas. This type of grant can only be used for projects
involving scenic beautification, landscaping, historic preservation, and facilities
for pedestrians and bicyclists. The $500,000 grant is part of $50 million that
was allocated statewide in TEA funding, according to Mr. Lester. The Georgia
Department of Transportation reviewed 255 applications that requested over $158
million in federal funds.
