Nearly 325 Students Receive Diplomas

Augusta State University’s fall commencement ceremony was held Saturday, December 15, at the Physical Education Athletic Complex on Wrightsboro Road.

The guest speaker was Dr. Kimberly Davies, associate professor of sociology and acting director of the Women’s Studies Program.

Nearly 325 students crossed the podium. Two ASU employees were among that total. Catherine Tuthill, admissions recruiter, received an MPA degree and Frances Sunderland, associate registrar, received a master’s degree in education.

Five diplomas were presented by ASU employees. Nathan Benedict received his diploma from his father, James M. Benedict, PhD, professor of mathematics and computer science; Frank Burau, received his diploma from his father, Dennis W. Burau, EDd, assistant professor emeritus of health and physical education; Kathryn P. Gledhill, received her diploma from her aunt Kathryn Thompson, the Start Up Center; Holly Marie Lindamood received her diploma from her mother, Angela Schorzman, office of institutional research; and Steven B. Jones, received his diploma from his mother, Iris Martinez Jones, office of Public Relations and Publications.

Since the late 1980s, ASU employees with relatives graduating may choose to present them their diplomas. “It’s a neat program, it lets you see how many people who work at ASU choose to send their children to school here,” said Katherine Sweeney, registrar and director of admissions.
