Morehouse School of Medicine President to speak
at Tri-College observance of MLK Celebration.
Dr. James R. Gavin, III, president of Morehouse School of Medicine, will
be the guest speaker at a celebration honoring Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr.'s birthday on Friday, Jan. 17, at noon in the Large Auditorium of
the Medical College of Georgia Auditoria Center. The ceremony is sponsored
by Augusta State University, Paine College and MCG.
Dr. Gavin became president at Morehouse School of Medicine in July, having
previously served as senior medical officer at the Howard Hughes Medical
Institute in Washington, D.C. Dr. Gavin graduated from Livingstone College
with a degree in chemistry. He earned a doctorate in biochemistry from
Emory University and his medical degree from Duke University. He was a
lieutenant commander in the U.S. Public Health Service from 1971-73 and
continues as a reserve officer in the Public Health Service.
Dr. Gavin is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy
of Sciences, the American Diabetes Association, the American Society of
Black Surgeons and the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He is
chairman of the National Diabetes Education Program.
He has served on many advisory boards and on the editorial boards of the
American Journal of Physiology and the
American Journal of Medical Sciences.
He is on the board of trustees for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,
Duke University and the Equidyne Corporation.
He has published more than 180 articles and abstracts in such publications
as Science, Journal of Applied Physiology,
Diabetes and the American
Journal of Physiology. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.
