A chapter of the American Association of University Professors has been chartered at Augusta State University. On Friday, Dec. 9, the charter members of AAUP and members of the organizations executive committee met with President William A. Bloodworth, Jr. and vice president of academic affairs Samuel Sullivan, to formalize the organization on campus. "This organization was formed to be inclusive and constructive, not adversarial," says Mark Fissel, professor of history, anthropology, and philosophy. "The organization's goals are to maintain academic freedom, integrity among students, and student outreach," he says. Dr. Fissel says that while notifying the administration was one of many steps the AAUP had to undergo during the charter process, it was also a way of reaching out to the administration. "We don't see administrators as adversaries. We want to work like a family. Our purpose is to advocate for faculty. We are real open about what we do," says Dr. Fissel. The group's minutes, bylaws, and officers are published on its website. "We are considering presenting one program per semester around various topics of interest to the academic community. The program for spring 2006, our initial offering, will be on Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 1- 2:15 p.m.," says James Benedict, professor of mathematics. The location of this program will be announced at a later date, but it will focus on the campus chapter's main initiative to present a program for the academic community on the differences between influence and plagiarism. For more information, call Dr. Fissel, AAUP president, at 737-1709.
