As Robin is to Batman, Waralene Currie is to Kathy Hamrick. Ms. Currie is the friendly senior secretary who greets you when you enter Dr. Hamrick's so-called bat cave, in the basement of Payne Hall. Handling the details for the Special Coordinator for Academic and Master Planning office is a major part of Ms. Currie's job. "She does a fine job, I don't know what I would do without her," says Dr. Hamrick. There was a time when Ms. Currie thought she would never be employed at Augusta State. For seven years, she consistently applied for various positions on campus. "I had been applying for positions on campus since 1997. I received a call from public safety saying that the position I originally applied for had been filled, however there was a part-time position available," says Ms. Currie. She was hired and began working in the public safety office in 2004. "I knew it was part of God's plan for me," she says. "It was a great place to work." Although she enjoyed working in the public safety office, Ms. Currie wanted a full-time position on campus. "They tried to make my job full-time, but no matter how hard they tried, it just wouldn't work. Then the job in Dr. Hamrick's office came open and I applied for it," she says. One of Ms. Currie's dreams is to earn a degree in business administration. She will begin classes this spring. The mother of four says that Dr. Hamrick has been very supportive of her educational goals. "She is a wonderful supervisor. She is very encouraging when it comes to my education and she's always there for advice," says Ms. Currie. Ms. Currie relies on the motherly advice she receives from Dr. Hamrick and other women in her life. Before Ms. Currie's 12 th birthday, she lost her mother tragically. "God placed people in my life to replace my mother. I have several mothers," she says. Ms. Currie also says that Dr. Hamrick and Wanda Dailey, office manager in public safety, are always there for her. She credits that same willingness to those she comes in contact with on campus. "I haven't met anyone on this campus who wasn't willing to lend a helping hand," says Ms. Currie.
