Historic
Augusta recognized Augusta State for its historic preservation efforts at their
annual meeting May 24. The organization presented a plaque to President William
A. Bloodworth, Jr., in recognition of the extensive renovation of the Maxwell
Alumni House.
The Maxwell Alumni House is the former home of Jefferson Maxwell, one of the founders of Maxwell Brothers Furniture. The two-story building was designed by famed architect T.E. Wendell and it contains three of the architect's distinctive mantles. Built in 1917, the house was given to the university by his estate. It was renovated in 1970 and, again, beginning in 1992. The renovation was completed last year after efforts were halted several times.
