Campus Notables
William N. Nelson, library, presented a workshop, Assessing Academic Library Performance in Light of Changing Standards at the annual meeting of the Tennessee Library Association. In addition, Nelson was appointed chair for the Association of Colleges and Research Libraries Committee for 2001-2002. He has served on the committee since 1999.
James
Kirkland, physical plant, has been selected as the Employee of the First
Quarter for the Physical Plant by his fellow employees. Kirkland has been in the
building maintenance shop for 5 years and at Augusta State University for the
past 6 years. He and his wife, Mary Edith, have two children, Forest, 4 and Hannah,
2. In his leisure time, Kirkland enjoys hunting and fishing.
Bill Bompart, academic affairs, presented Connections to Applications at the Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Spring Conference in Duluth. In addition, Bompart presented Administrator's Views of Faculty at the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine faculty retreat in Edwardsville.

Mark C. Fissel, academic affairs, published a book entitled English Warfare, 1511-1642. The book, published by the British company Routledge, was released in May.
David
L. White, library, made a presentation to the Regents' Academic Committee
on Libraries about the eCore project of Planning, Developing and Designing Library
Research Modules that would be used to support the core curriculum of GLOBE (Global
Learning Online for Business and Education).
Mike
Bishku, history and anthropology, participated in a panel discussion entitled
Turkey and the West at Villanova (Pa.) University
for the annual meeting of the American Council for the Study of Islamic Societies.
Bishku spoke on the subject of Destination European Union?
The Politics and Economics of Turkey's Case for Admission.
Maureen J. Akins, computer services, received a certificate in Instructional Systems Design and Technology from the University of Georgia.
Raymond
A. Whiting, political science, and Janice E. Williams,
fine arts, along with 15 ASU students visited Washington, D.C., as part of a curriculum
learning experience. The group visited galleries, museums and government offices.
Saundra J. Reinke, political science, organized a panel for the American Society for Public Administration's 62nd Annual Conference held in Newark titled Servant Leadership and Ethics. She also presented a paper at the 2001 Georgia Political Science Association annual convention and the 24th Annual Teaching Public Administration Conference in Phoenix titled Teaching Teamwork Through Research.
Gwen
Wood, political science, chaired a panel discussion titled Intergovernmental
Conflicts and Cooperation in Georgia and presented a paper Incentives
to Resist Over-development: The Georgia Greenspace Program at the 2001
Georgia Political Science Association annual convention in Hilton Head Island.
Paul Harris, political science, presented Contending Ideologies: Public Choice Theory versus Civic Reform at the Georgia Political Association annual convention in Hilton Head Island and Is Germany an Ethnic Nation? Ethno-National Identity Transformation in Light of Post-War Immigration at the Georgia Association of Historians annual meeting held at Augusta State University. In addition, he co-edited Migration and Immigration Studies and published an article titled Imagined Identity: Immigration, Ueberfremdung, and Cultural Chauvinism in Far Right German Political Discourse in the journal German Policy Studies. Harris also published an article in French, L'immigration juive vers l'Allemagne reunifiee, ou la renaissance d'une Communautee, in the journal Yod: etudes hebraiques et juives modernes et contemporaines.
