Staff Excellence Award
Sherry
Moore, college of business administration, was recently awarded the Staff
Excellence Award for fall semester. The Staff Advisory Board nominated Moore,
who works for the college of business administration as a degree program assistant
since 1998. A native of Charlotte, NC and 1994 ASU graduate, Moore has two children,
Karen and Robbie. In her spare time, she likes to spend time with her two grandchildren,
Blake and Lesley.
Donna Wear, biology, and Barry R. Thomson and Holly Thornton, teacher development, made two presentations at the Georgia Science Teachers Association in Macon titled Reptiles and Amphibians and Authentic Assessment in the Classroom.
Michael Searles, history and anthropology, made a presentation titled Black Cowboy: Myth and Reality at the Africans in the West Conference at the Smithsonian Institute Museum of American History in Washington, DC.
Emam Hoosain, teacher development, presented Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI): A Case Study of Problem Solving at the Third Annual Richmond County Instructional Conference.
Sharon A. Feaster, teacher development, presented Engaging Students in Discussion at the Georgia Read/Write Now Conference 2001: The Art of Literacy. The presentation described the purpose and implementation of discussion circles to encourage students to read literature and other texts.
Dr. Feaster and Beth Pendergraf, teacher development, along with several public school teachers, presented Maintaining Conversation Between Partners Schools and the University at the Georgia P-16 Network Meeting in Macon.
Jasper
Cooke, Public Safety, participated in a Georgia Association of Chiefs
of Police Winter Training Conference during February with about 300 other law
enforcement executives from around the state.
Monique Baugus has led efforts to revitalize the Georgia Branch of the American Counseling Association. The organization has its first meeting of the new state-wide branch Feb. 24 on the campus of ASU.
Debra
van Tuyll, languages, literature, and communications, received a doctoral
degree from the University of South Carolina.
Catherine
Tuthill, admissions counselor and MPA student, made a presentation at
the 24th Annual Teaching Public Administration Conference at Arizona State University.
It was titled Aiming for Practitioner Success: Assessing
the Effectiveness of an MPA Program, which was based on the results of
a research project undertaken by students in Saundra Reinke's Research Methods
and Quantitative Methods classes. The project involved a survey of 120 public
and nonprofit agencies in the CSRA to identify the knowledge, skills, and abilities
needed to succeed as managers in this area.
Robert
Foster, fine arts, received a PhD from the University of Northern Colorado.
Roxann Bustos, library, co-authored an article, The Impact of a Statewide Electronic Database Collection on the Reference Desk, that was published in Transforming Traditional Libraries, a peer-reviewed e-journal. The article can be accessed at www.lib.usf.edu/-mdibble/ttl/tocvl-1.htm.
Jana Sandarg, languages, literature, and communications, was elected president of the Foreign Language Association of Georgia at their annual conference in Athens. Three professors in languages, literature, and communications made recent presentations at the conference of the Foreign Language Association of Georgia , which was held in Athens.
Sara Griswold and Pedro Holyos Salcedo presented Observacion de los metaplasmos mas usuales en el uso diario del idioma espanol. Jana Sandarg presented How to Give a Conference Presentation, and she co-presented Ways that Study Abroad Enhances Teaching.
Bill Bompart, academic affairs, made a presentation at the American Association for Higher Education Conference on Faculty Roles and Rewards in Tampa. It was titled These are Faculty Roles?
Bill Nelson, Reese Library, was elected as the Georgia state representative to the Southeastern Library Association (SELA) for 2001-04 and appointed chair of the Interstate Cooperation Committee for 2000-02. He was also elected to represent the Georgia Chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) on the national ACRL Chapters Council for 2000-02. In February, he also served as a library consultant to Drury University in Springfield, Missouri.
Chip Darracott and Michael O'Connor, kinesiology and health science, made a presentation entitled Using IntraKal for a University-Level Wellness Course at the Southern District of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Convention, held in Birmington, Alabama. O'Connor also made a presentation entitled Can a Professional Development School Initiative Help a PETE Program?
