SaulBruce Saul, biology, presented Comparisons of Proteins Present in Eastern Mosquitofish Populations from Augusta and St. Catherine’s Island, Georgia and An Index of Biotic Integrity for Beaverdam Creek in Burke County, Georgia at the Georgia Chapter of American Fisheries 2002 annual meeting in Augusta. Students Christina Jones, Jessica Brewster and Keith Gibbs were co-presenters, while Kate Ranklin, Lonnie Davis, Jennifer Delk, Sally Crunkleton and Ernest Muhammad helped author the Index presentation.

Emil Urban, biology, served as external auditor for Dr. Taher Ba Omar’s application for promotion to associate professor at Sultan Qaboos University and for Eric Sande’s doctoral thesis at Makerere University, Kampula, Uganda.

Gendernalik CooperMary Gendernalik Cooper, teacher development, presented Collaborative Accountability and Leadership to the Georgia P-16 Initiative Meeting in Savannah. The presentation detailed the positive effects of the establishment of the Professional Development School model. Sandra Anderson, from Dearing Elementary, co-presented.

Cooper also presented The CSRA P-16 Induction of Beginning Teachers Project with Beth Pendergraft, teacher development, and Eileen Sinda, Brookwood Elementary. Cooper presented Teacher Leadership in the ASU Professional Development Schools with Barry Thompson, Dorothy Kay, Mary Bowers, Valerie McMahee and Thomas Gamblin, and Evaluation of Partner Schools and Why Have Partner Schools.

Gordon Eisenman and Holly Thornton, teacher development, presented Impacting Student Learning at the Georgia P-16 Initiative Meeting in Savannah. The session featured a description of the ISL component of the PDS initiative.

Ann Taylor, teacher development, presented Strategies That Connect Teaching to Learning at the International Alliance of Teacher Scholars, Inc. Conference on College and University Teaching – South, at the University of Georgia in Athens. The session introduced an array of critical teaching strategies.

Campus Notables

BloodworthWilliam A. Bloodworth, Jr., was elected to the 77-member Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).


The Commission accredits ASU as well as approximately 780 colleges and universities throughout the southeastern region of the United States and Latin America.

CaldwellLee Ann Caldwell, history and anthropology, gave an address on Slavery in Antebellum Georgia at the annual conference of the Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries at the University of Georgia.

Eric Skipper, languages, literature, and communications, presented Dour Views on Spanish Education in R. Pérez de Ayala’s A.M.D.G. and ‘El professor auxiliar’ at the 27th annual conference on Literature and Film at Florida State University, Tallahassee. Skipper is also slated to present Death in the Hills: The Mountains as a Place of Refuge and Dying for Steinbeck’s Mexican Characters at a conference at Hofstra University.

Susan Robertson, psychology, spoke at the Aiken Community Mental Health Center’s 17th annual conference in Myrtle Beach. The title of her talk was The Integration of Spirituality and Psychotherapy.

Willene Holmes, financial aid, and Carol Giardina, admissions, co-presented a program at the annual Southern Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers conference in Birmingham, Ala., entitled Admissions and Financial Aid Opportunities for the Adult Learner. The presentation shares strategies used in the Returning Adult Re-Entry Program at ASU.

Counselors from the Counseling and Testing Center participated in a joint conference of Georgia College Counseling Association and National American College Counseling Association at St. Simon’s Island. The theme for the conference was Beginnings: Collaborating for a Brighter Future in College Counseling. Robert Mays was recognized as a charter member of the GCCA. Ginny Luke was elected president-elect of the GCCA. She will have a three-year term serving as president-elect, president, and then as past president. Michael Cronk was elected Augusta Regional Representative for GCCA. Shannon Stephens was principal presenter for a workshop titled HELP! How can a college counselor coordinate alcohol and drug programs on campus? at the ACCA conference.
