African American fraternity chartered at ASU

fraternity membersBrotherhood, scholarship, and service are what drew six ASU students to establish the university’s first African American fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma.

In fall 2001, Phi Beta Sigma became a chartered organization under the direction of Samuel Richardson, EdD., assistant professor of learning support. The fraternity is currently involved in community service projects the include mentoring at-risk students, the Cedar Grove Cemetery Project, and escorting middle school students around campus in the PREP program.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was founded at Howard University in 1914 as an international organization of college and professional men. Culture for service and service for humanity best describes the fraternity’s principles. Phi Beta Sigma is one of eight predominately African American Greek-lettered organizations, and is one of three on the ASU campus. The other organizations are Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta sororities.
