Public Safety officers promote child safety

crash dummies and studentsOfficers from the Public Safety Department hosted a safety demonstration Feb. 14 at Lamar Elementary, as part of child passenger safety awareness week.

Vince and Larry, the crash test dummies, were on hand, and Sylvia Thomson from the Georgia Occupant Safety office in Augusta spoke to the children about seat belt safety. ASU officers also judged a poster contest, based on seatbelt safety, with the winning class receiving a pizza party.

“We’re trying to reduce the number of children injured or killed who were not wearing seatbelts or a child restraint device,” said Jasper Cooke, ASU public safety director. By Georgia law, any child younger than 12, or less than 75 pounds, are required to be in a restraint device, he said.

The demonstration was part of ASU’s ongoing adopt-a-school community involvement
commitment.
