Alumna Nita Wiggins will be ASU's commencement speaker
Nita Wiggins, an ‘86 communications graduate who is now a sportscaster with Fox 4 TV in Dallas, will be the speaker at this year’s commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 12, at 10 a.m. in the James Brown Arena.
“I was so honored to be considered. When Dr. Bloodworth said, I was the only consideration this year, it began to take hold that the university holds me in high regard. I am still awed to think that my message to the graduates will be something that they can think back on and repeat to their children. Even their grandchildren,” says Ms. Wiggins.
She is a former sports writer for the Augusta Chronicle and sports reporter for WRDW Newschannel 12. Ms. Wiggins’ career has presented her with opportunities to live and work in Memphis, Tenn. and Seattle, Wash. with her reaching her ultimate goal of working for a Dallas television station.
Ms. Wiggins has been a sports reporter with the Fox station since 1999. She has covered the Dallas Cowboys, the Dallas Stars, who were the 1999 Stanley Cup Champions, and has had international assignments that include Lance Armstrong in the Tour de France, the Mavericks basketball coach’s visit to Senegal, West Africa, and the Cowboy’s quarterback appearance in Germany for NFL Europe.
Ms. Wiggins has also been instrumental in bringing a week-long study abroad program to Senegal to Augusta State in which 10 ASU students will travel to Africa and write about their experience there.
She is a licensed amateur boxing judge and a certified basketball referee. In 1995, she established the Wiggins-Lott Scholarship at ASU. Ms. Wiggins is currently enrolled at Richland College studying French.
