ASU to host annual Take Back the Night

Augusta, Ga. - Over 20 percent of women in college have experienced an attempted or completed rape, according to the Center for Disease Control’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. Statistics such as these have prompted Augusta State to increase awareness about sexual assaults by hosting the annual Take Back the Night.

Now in its 12th year at ASU, the annual Take Back the Night rally and march will be preceded by two weeks of events to provide the community, faculty, staff, and students with information on sexual assault prevention and awareness. On Friday, April 18, the annual Clothesline Project will begin, with students and guests decorating T-shirts at University Village from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The T-shirts will be displayed, beginning Monday, April 21, at 9 a.m. along the History Walk and the front entrance of campus. Each T-shirt will represent a survivor of sexual violence.

On Tuesday, April 22, at 7 p.m., there will be a film screening of Date Rape: A Violation of Trust in the Jaguar Student Activities Center Coffeehouse. A discussion will follow with Christie Launius, campus coordinator of the event and director of the Women’s Studies Program, and Anne Ealick-Henry, director of Rape Crisis and Sexual Assault Services. Shannon Nix, a counselor in ASU’s Counseling Center, will facilitate the discussion.

Culminating the events on Thursday, April 24, will be a rally and candlelight march, which begins in front of the Maxwell Theatre. At 7:30 p.m., the rally will begin, and more than a dozen organizations will be available to offer information on sexual assault. A T-shirt station will also be set up for those wanting to paint a T-shirt. Dr. Launius will emcee the event, and President William A. Bloodworth, Jr., will provide the welcome. Speakers will include Ashley Wright, assistant District Attorney; Carl C. Brown, Jr., Richmond County Superior Court Judge; and Ms. Ealick-Henry.

For more information, call Dr. Launius in ASU’s Department of English and Foreign Languages at 706-667-4430.
