David White, library, presented Building CyberLibraries: Connecting with Distance Learning at the Georgia Council of Media Organizations and Southeastern Library Association 2000 joint conference on Jekyll Island. His paper was one of six selected by the Georgia Library Association for presentation.

Jeff Heck, library, and Magali Duignan, learning support, presented a session titled ESL Students Publishing on the Web: Tangible Results from Hands-on Activities at the fall conference of Carolina TESOL in Raleigh.

Bill Bompart, academic affairs, presented Mathematics in the Real World at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Central Regional Conference in Omaha.

Kim Davies, sociology, was the featured speaker at Ft. Gordon at a luncheon sponsored by the Family Advocacy Program. Her topic was Domestic Violence and Celebrating Advocacy.

B. McKinley Thomas, kinesiology and health science, participated in the 2nd International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases in Atlanta. He also developed on online lecture based on the conference for the University of Pittsburgh entitled Epidemiology of Emerging Infectious Diseases: An Examination of Global Threats from a Public Health Education Perspective.

Valerie Cato, teacher development, presented Technology Connected Problem Based Learning for Middle Grades at the Problem Based Learning 2000 Conference at Sanford University. During November, she will present Problem Based Learning in Middle Grades Teacher Preparation at the National Middle School Association Conference in St. Louis.

Emam Hoosain, teacher development, presented Problem Solving Using Counters at the 41st Annual Conference of the Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GCTM) in October in Rock Eagle, GA.

Charles Jenks, teacher development, made three presentations at the National Council for the Social Studies in San Antonio entitled Mentoring New Social Studies Teachers, Using Oral History to Honor the Past, and Professors in the Classroom. He also co-authored an article appearing in the November issue of Action in Teacher Education titled Making the Transition from Preservice to Inservice Teaching: Beginning Teacher's Reflection.

Michael N. Searles, a.k.a., Cowboy Mike, participated in a book signing of the Black Cowboys of Texas, sponsored by Texas A& M University Press, at the Western History Association's annual meting in San Antonio. He also served on the awards committee.

Bill Nelson, Reese Library, made several presentations at the Southeastern Library Association Conference (SELAC) on assessment and the new Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) standards. The October conference was held at Jekyll Island. He also presented at the Library Directors Forum at the Appalachian College Consortium in Grayson, KY. Nelson was elected by the Georgia Chapter of the ACRL to a two year term as the representative to the ACRL Council, which meets semiannually at the national conference.

Kathy Schofe, public relations, presented a workshop on Writing and Editing Your Newsletter at the Southeast Regional Conference of American Business Clubs, held recently on Tybee Island.

Wayne Mixon, history and anthropology, presented a paper entitled Like Father, Like Son: The Reverend Ira Caldwell, the Writer Erskine Caldwell, and Social Reform in the South at the annual meeting of the Popular Culture Association in the South. He also chaired the session entitled The Christ-Haunted South: Itinerant Preaching, Literature, and History. The meeting was held in Nashville during October.

Richard C. Capps, chemistry and physics, will make a presentation at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of American in Reno, Nevada, a conference hosted by the University of Nevada-Reno, the Desert Research Institute, and the Geological Society of Nevada. His paper is entitled Carlin-Type Jerritt-Canyon Style Gold Mineralization - Northern Adobe Range, Elko County, Nevada.

Holly Thornton, teacher development, made three recent presentations. The first, Getting the Good Word Out about NBPTS, was made at the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) and National Middle School Association (NMSA) Conference in Orlando. She also presented Collaborating to Create True Middle Schools and Fear or Faith: Adolescence and School Violence at a conference of the National Middle Schools Association in St. Louis.
