Martin David Jones, fine arts, was a participant in the Conductor's Institute of South Carolina's Opera Conducting Program at Spoleto, which was held in Charleston, S. C.

 

Elizabeth House, arts and sciences, published an invited book review of Philip Page's Reclaiming Community in Contemporary African American Fiction in American Literature.

Anthony Kellman, languages, literature, and communications, recently published his third book of poetry, Wings of a Stranger. A compact disc by the same title has also been released. Both the book and CD are published by People Tree Press, UK. The new book explores the nature of reconciliation with individuals, history, and society. The CD features Kellman's acoustic TUK style fused with European folk and contains 9 tracks: five poems taken from the book and 4 songs, parts of which appear in the book as epigraphs. One of the song lyrics, The Place You Live In, has recently been accepted for inclusion in the forthcoming children's poetry anthology, Climb onto my Lap, to be published by Simon and Schuster.

Wayne Mixon, history and anthropology, presented a lecture at Wilmington College in Wilmington Ohio. entitled Father Oglethorpe's Baby: The Early Years of Georgia. The event was sponsored by the Daughters of the American Colonists.

Mark Warner, teacher development, published an article in the Middle School Journal entitled Internet Teaming in Middle School Teacher Preparation. He also made presentations at an Augusta conference called Arts Infusion in the Classroom. The presentations included Using Technology Tools in the Classroom, Producing Art Infused Slide Shows and Designing Web Pages for Student Inquiry-Based Learning. His article entitled The Fifth Dimension Application of Cultural Historical Activity Theory, Inquiry Based Learning, Computers, and Telecommunications to Change Prospective Teachers' Perceptions, has been accepted for inclusion in the January 2001 issue of Journal of Educational Computing Research.

Congratulations to Kim Jones (director of budgets) and husband Charles, on the birth of their son, Charles Kevin Jones Jr., on September 26. Kevin weighed in at 8 pounds and 9 and one- half ounces.

 

Mary Gendernalik Cooper, teacher development, presented at the National Association of State Boards of Education-Study group on coordination and accountability in teacher education, in Washington D.C. The title of the presentation was P-16 Initiatives in Teacher Education. She also attended the U.S. Department of Education Title II-HEA, where she served as a teacher quality grant evaluator for multimillion dollar funding.

Sharon Feaster, teacher development, has published six reports in the Texas Center for Educational Technology. They include Engaged learning, Staff, Development: Illinois-Leadership, Commitment and Risk; STARTnet community by Design; USDLC Leadership: Partnership for Success; Coastal Bend curriculum Integration Training); Project Integrate: Time to Learn, Time to Plan; Catalyst for Communication and challenge: PT#3 Technology Leadership Institute.

ASU and Literacy in Action Council are among the applications being considered for the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award for campus community collaboration. The awards will be presented in November at the Georgia State University.

Philip Morsberger, Morris Eminent Scholar in Art, was among 20 artists selected to participate in Celebrating the Lighter Side of Bar Area Figuration at the San Jose Museum of Art in San Jose Calif. The exhibit of "seriously funny art" has been on display during September at the museum.

Ralph Walker, research center, recently participated in a political panel discussion at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee for the Southeast Region.

Michael Schwartz, fine arts, made a presentation at the September campus forum of Phi Kappa Phi entitled Shattering the Self through Buddhist Practice. Schwartz has a doctorate in art history from Columbia University as well as master degrees in philosophy and art history. He earned a bachelor's degree in English Literature from Rutgers College. He is a founding member of the Georgia Continental Philosophy Circle and recently ended a two-year term as co-president. He also is a member of the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy, Merleau-Ponty Circle, American Philosophical Association, the Southeastern Renaissance Society, Renaissance Society of America, British Society for Aesthetics, the American Society for Aesthetics, and several other organizations.
