Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences Receives Grant

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences received a grant from AFCEA (Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association) that will fund ASU membership privileges in the Oracle Academic Initiative. According to Bob Jarman, associate professor of mathematics and computer sciences, the initiative will allow ASU to purchase Oracle products, license-free, for a year. This allows ASU professors the opportunity to introduce Oracle database software in the curriculum. Jarman says he will be using the software in three courses he teaches. "There is a significant demand for Oracle-qualified individuals, " he says. "This license-free software will give our students exposure to working with Oracle." The check presentation was made at the September meeting of AFCEA at Fort Gordon. Attending from ASU were Jarman, Department Chair Fred Maynard, assistant professor Joanne Sexton, and ROTC instructor MSGT Jerry Hall. Mr. Bill Pope, local chapter AFCEA president, presented the award.
