What's Pac Man?

Students who graduated high school this year and entered ASU (and other universities) this fall were mostly born in 1982. Interesting facts now circulating on the internet (Lifeminders) show that their frames of reference may not be the same as that shared by many who work and teach at ASU (and who were born quite a few years before 1982). For new ASU freshmen who were born in 1982:

  1. They were 11 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the Cold War.
  2. They have never feared a nuclear war.
  3. They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.
  4. Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums. The expression "you sound like a broken record" means nothing to them.
  5. They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Pong.
  6. They have always had an answering machine.
  7. Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels; nor have they seen a black & white TV.
  8. Jay Leno has always been host of The Tonight Show.
  9. They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.
  10. Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are all places, not groups.
