Augusta State University Celebrates A-Day

A Day for Augusta State University will be celebrated with events scheduled throughout the first week of October. On Tuesday, October 2, a GALA Concert will feature all the music groups in fine arts, (choir, orchestra, jazz band, and ensemble), in a program that pays tribute to Harry Jacobs. Music alumni will also be featured in the program. The 8 p.m. concert will be held in the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre, with a reception to follow. On Wednesday, October 3, the annual Health Fair will offer hearing and vision screenings, body fat analysis, blood pressure checks, and more. The free event is sponsored by the Nursing Department, and several community agencies will be participating. On Thursday, October 4, a graduate program drop-in will be held in Washington Hall, from 5 - 7 p.m., with program representatives available to answer questions. The event is sponsored by the Admissions Office and Public Relations.

Friday, October 5th, is A Day for Augusta State University, and it will be kicked off at 8 a.m. with a breakfast and forum on race relations in Galloway Hall. Sponsored by the university's chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, it features three panelists discussing Black And White: The Relevance of Race? At 8:30 a.m., Russell Stulken, associate professor of biology, will discuss race as a biological concept; at 9 a.m., Christopher Murphy, professor of anthropology, will explore race as a social construct; and at 9:30 a.m., Joseph Greene, Cree Walker Professor of Business Administration, will address race in America. At 4 p.m. is an A-Day celebration and fish fry on the Performing Arts Theatre lawn.

At noon, Andy Smith, Georgia Tech, will discuss Three Major Changes with Aging: The First is Memory, and the Other Two I Forgot. This first program of the fall Psychology Speaker Series will be held at noon in W1001 New Science Building. At 5 p.m., a reception will open an art exhibition of works by Jeremy Vaughan and Bernadette Vielbig in the Fine Arts Gallery. Campus Visitation on October 6 will be held from 1 - 3 p.m. in Washington Hall with representatives from academic and administrative offices participating. A 5k road race, The Jaguar Jaunt, will also be held on the 6th, and registration should be made at the Office of Alumni Relations.
